Treatment Options for Plantar Warts

Warts are ugly, and depending on where they are, they can be painful too. A common type of wart, known as a plantar wart, grows only on the feet and can interfere with wearing shoes. Your podiatrist can help you get rid of plantar warts. The podiatrists at Hampton Roads Foot and Ankle Specialists Dr. Sara Bouraee, Dr. Jon Houseworth, Dr. Sun Byun, Dr. Daria Piotrowksi, and Dr. Shruti Vyas, offer comprehensive foot and ankle services, including treatment of plantar warts. They have two convenient office locations in Williamsburg, and Hampton, VA, to help you and your feet.

What You Should Know about Plantar Warts

Plantar warts are caused by skin contact with a virus. This virus thrives in public areas like swimming pools, locker rooms, and gym facilities. One of the best ways you can prevent plantar warts is to always wear shoes when you are in public areas. Also remember not to share socks, shoes, or linens with other people.

Plantar warts look like hard, rough bumps. They can also have small black dots in the centers, which are clotted blood vessels. Plantar warts can form on all areas of your feet, including the soles of your feet, your heels, in between your toes, and on the tops of your feet.

For small warts, you may be able to remove them with an over-the-counter wart removal product. However, these products might not result in permanent wart removal, because the warts may grow back.

For permanent wart removal, it’s best to visit your podiatrist, who may recommend:

  • Peeling the wart with topical salicylic acid
  • Freezing the wart with liquid nitrogen
  • Killing the underlying virus with laser treatment
