What Causes Bunions?

An outward bulge on your big toe, corns, and calluses where the toes overlap, or redness, swelling, or sore skin around the base of your big toe are all signs of a bunion. Additionally, you might experience increased foot pain or a restricted range of motion in your big toe. Avoiding high-heeled shoes, choosing shoes with a wide-toe box, and wearing orthotics can all help prevent bunions. However, they frequently result from abnormalities in your foot structure at birth, changes in the shape of your foot, wearing unsuitable shoes like narrow or tight ones, having arthritis, or suffering a foot injury. If you have bunions, our podiatrists Dr. Sara Bouraee, Dr. Jon Houseworth, Dr. Sun Byun, Dr. Daria Piotrowksi, and Dr. Shruti Vyas, at Hampton Road Foot and Ankle Specialists in Williamsburg, and Hampton, VA welcome you to discuss treatment options.

What Is the Main Cause of Bunions?

Genetics, flat feet, low arches, ill-fitting shoes, or acute and chronic inflammatory illnesses like arthritis all increase your risk for bunions. The primary cause depends on the individual, but other reasons bunions develop are added foot stress from an injury at home or on the field and rheumatoid arthritis (an inflammatory condition) that can also increase your risk. If bunions are left untreated, symptoms can become chronic and lead to complications like hammertoes, foot swelling, or bursitis. Our podiatrist can identify your primary cause when visiting our office.

If conservative therapies aren't alleviating your bunions, talk to one of our podiatrists Dr. Sara Bouraee, Dr. Jon Houseworth, Dr. Sun Byun, Dr. Daria Piotrowksi, and Dr. Shruti Vyas, about treatment options. They'll conduct x-rays and measurements to determine the severity of the bunion and develop a treatment plan after assessing how much it bothers you. A bunionectomy involves shaving off the enlarged portion of the bone and realigning the ligaments, muscles, and tendons with a minimally invasive procedure and our podiatrist for mild cases. In moderate situations, our podiatrist may recommend additional surgeries to relieve pain and restore foot function.
