What Are Bent-Toes?
Bent-toes develop as a deformity in the second, third, and fourth toes, causing painful walking and wearing shoes. This deformity causes your toes to resemble the shape of a (hammer) toe because of how the toe's middle joint bends upward. Bent-toes are painful, unattractive, and ruin the shape of your shoes.
If you let your toes go untreated, they eventually become inflexible, and your only option is surgery. Due to constant rubbing of the toe on your shoe, you can develop corns or painful calluses on the top of the middle joint.
You undoubtedly experience chronic pain in the toes and feet, which makes walking difficult. You will have trouble finding comfortable shoes, and walking becomes quite a challenge if you are on your feet much of the day or night.
How Do Bent-Toes Develop?
Is there something pushing your toes out of position all the time causing your toes to become cramped and tight?
This chronic toe position tends to affect the muscles and tendons in your feet, causing them to no longer relax or uncurl from this cramped position.
- Constantly cramped toes occur when you wear the wrong-sized shoes. Poorly fitting shoes force your toes into unnatural positions. Soon, your toes become accustomed to this unnatural position and remain in that position.
- Do you have high arches or flat feet? If so, you are at risk for bent-toes.
- Are your toes longer than usually seen? Long toes become acclimated to extra pressure and become hammertoes.
- Certain conditions put you at risk for bent-toes, such as rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes.
- If you have bunions at the side of your foot, this can put extra pressure on your toes, causing hammertoes.

- Curled toes
- Pain in the ball of the foot and at the top of the hammertoe

- Formation of corns/calluses on the top middle joint of the affected toe
