What is Plantar Fasciitis or Heel Spur Syndrome?

Our esteemed doctors at Hampton Roads Foot and Ankle Specialists in Williamsburg and Hampton, VA, may help you overcome foot and heel pain.

If you have plantar fasciitis, the heel can become very painful. While everyone has foot pain at some point, it eventually goes away and can be due to the shoes you wear or when you are on your feet for extended lengths of time. Plantar fasciitis pain does not go away.

If you experience heel pain that persists and does not go away, you could have plantar fasciitis. Upon waking up, you may experience a stabbing pain in the heel first thing in the morning. This pain becomes worse the longer you are on your feet or sitting.

A thick band of connective tissue stretches across the bottom of the foot. When this tissue becomes inflamed, it causes a painful stabbing sensation in the foot and heel.

The purpose of this tissue band is for shock absorption to the foot. The things that increase your risk of developing plantar fasciitis are increased pressure on the foot, wear and tear, and constant stretching. These things can cause tiny tissue tears that, in turn, cause swelling and pain.

There are specific activities that can cause this condition to develop or become worse.

  • Walking or Running
  • Obesity
  • Shoes that do not provide adequate support
  • Exercises
  • People who have a high arch or flat feet
  • Uneven distribution of weight when walking, standing, working out, or running
