Treating Plantar Warts

Find out how our podiatrists will take care of your plantar warts.

Plantar warts, or warts that appear on the soles of the feet, might be harmless but they certainly don’t make it any easier to put on shoes or go for a walk. If you’re tired of hurting every time you stand up or have to move then it might be time to turn to our Williamsburg, and Hampton, VA, podiatrists Drs. Bouraee, Houseworth, Byun, and Piotrowksi to treat your plantar warts.

Yes, plantar warts go away on their own, but because this can take months or even years, you may not wish to wait (especially if you are in pain or you’re dealing with multiple warts). There are several ways in which our Hampton and Williamsburg, VA, foot doctors will treat a plantar wart. A lot will depend on the location and severity of the wart. Here are the top ways to treat plantar warts:

Cryotherapy

This is one of the most common treatment options for plantar warts, which involves spraying liquid nitrogen on the wart. The liquid nitrogen will cause the wart to blister and then fall off within a week or two. You may need to come in for more than one treatment session to see to achieve the full result.

Salicylic Acid

Sometimes a salicylic acid cream or ointment is applied to the wart, which will cause the skin to peel, removing the wart in layers. Unlike cryotherapy, which has to be performed in our office under a qualified professional, this treatment option is one that our patients can do themselves at home, but they will need to come into the office so we can see how the treatment is progressing.

Cantharidin

Like salicylic acid, this is another topical cream that you can apply to the wart. When applied it causes the wart to blister, which makes it easier for our team to easily remove the blistered skin. The process is quick, taking about 1-2 days for the blister to form. The area usually heals in about 4-7 days after applying cantharidin.

Laser Therapy

Pulsed dye laser therapy is another way to remove a wart. This option allows us to use very precise technology to burn the blood vessels inside the wart, which causes the wart to fall off. All healthy tissue is preserved during this treatment, and most patients will require a couple of laser sessions every few weeks. Laser therapy is typically used on more stubborn warts that haven’t responded to other treatment options.
